In response to people who don’t understand the dislike for LoK, despite all the long, lovely fan-essays:

I don’t get why people are so attached to Legend of Korra in general and to Makorra in particular that they get so angry and defensive over well thought-out, well-reasoned critique and discussion over the show’s many flaws. Even if people outright hated it for superficial and nonoffensive reasons (didn’t like the designs, thought the humor was crap, decided the characters were dishwater,) I don’t get how a show as short as LoK can generate a following so rabid. Is it leftover fannishness from ATLA spilling over? Is it slavish dedication to the cult of Bryke? Is it the last desperate flailings of people clutching on to the sinking ship of hope and good feelings we all had when this show started to come out? I mean, this was one season. Just one season. Why all the severe defensiveness?

Someone asked me what would be a scene I would have loved to see in Legend of Korra, and I thought about it, because there honestly are a plethora of unmade scenes that could have been in this show. The one that took the forefront at the time was the scene with Mako nearly burning some random…

OZAI ISN’T ZUKO’S FATHER WHICH COMPLETELY THROWS OUT ZUKO AS A LEGITIMATE HEIR TO THE THRONE AND THE ENTIRE ARC OF ZUKO HAVING TWO WARRING BLOODLINES INSIDE HIM TO HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN AND ANYONE WHO TRIES TO PULL “WELL OZAI RAISED HIM” WITH ME GETS THE DUNGEON FOR 3948758456 YEARS BECAUSE OZAI WAS AN ABUSIVE FUCK AND IROH WAS ZUKO’S REAL FATHER IN ANY SENSE OF THE WORD THAT MATTERS AND MIKE AND BRYAN AND GENE YANG ARE IN A TIME OUT NOW THEY ARE GROUNDED FOREVER

THEY TRASHED ZUKO’S DEVELOPMENT AND HIS CHARACTER AND THE STRUGGLES HE WENT THROUGH BY MAKING HIM SOMEONE ELSE’S SON

LITERALLY HIS ENTIRE ARC WAS BASED OFF OF OZAI’S ABUSE AND NEGLECT TOWARDS HIM AND HIM BEING A CHILD WHO JUST WANTED HIS FATHER TO LOVE HIM

THIS IS THE WORST NARRATIVE BETRAYAL IN THE HISTORY OF BETRAYALS

THIS IS SHITTIER THAN THE ENTIRETY OF THE LAST AIRBENDER MOVIE WHICH AT LEAST MADE ME LAUGH AT ITS STUPIDITY

I AM IN A RAGE

THIS IS PROBABLY MADDER ABOUT FICTIONAL COMICS CHARACTERS THAN I HAVE EVER BEEN

HOW DARE THEY.

As you can probably tell, I’m still bitter about the lack of interaction between Asami and Korra.

Avatar Aang’s feelings on cultural appropriation. (It ain’t cool)

maybe y’all will understand it better if you see it in the form of a cartoon you like instead of a person you don’t know

YEP

Can everybody stop giving Gene Yang credit for this?

We know that Aang is right because Aang is right. Cultural appropriation is wrong.

However, Yang spends the rest of the comics showing us just how “wrong” Aang is. We’re not supposed to get “cultural appropriation is wrong” from his statements. We’re supposed to get “What an outdated POV! Culture belongs to everyone! They’re SUPPOSED to mix!”

Look at the people who agree with Aang. (the radical Freedom Fighters and the absurdly violent King Kuei). Look at the people who disagree. (Zuko the golden boy, the colonists, and even Katara). Look at the conclusion for god’s sake. (Aang realizes that he was wrong and starts teaching these girls the ways of the Air Nomads).

The message everyone is getting out of this post is a good message, but it’s not the intended one.

I recommend that you read this much better post for a better look at how Yang undermined this message throughout the comic.

Sigh

Am I the only one that wonders what the ending would have been if Korra took Asami with her instead of Mako? First of all, there would be no firebending walking on the walls, electric shock, etc, but there also wouldn’t have been the threat of Asami’s bending taken away. And the nonbending crowd might have listened to Asami, since she’s also a nonbender, so there mightn’t be a reason to run out the back, where Mako had taken Korra’s bending and almost took Mako’s.
Who knows how that’d turn out? I think anything could have happened at that point. Still, I wish Asami had more bonding time with Korra instead of being a love rival.
